The real thing

This week we had our first assessed negotiation. Before the actual exercise we had to negotiate about the assessment criteria of the upcoming negotiation with our whole group. This group negotiation went much better than the one we had earlier in the course. Now we had more organized approach to the problem which made it easier to everyone to participate and have their voice heard. We discovered pretty soon that it was surprisingly hard to come with good evaluation criteria. How much to give emphasis to the non-verbal communication and how to measure it? What makes a good argumentation and when is the win-win solution achieved? Many questions had to be answered before we could decide on the assessment criteria. However, we managed to get it all together and in my opinion the criteria we came up with were rather reasonable.

The negotiation exercise started with sharing ideas and strategies with the other students. In my opinion this was very helpful and I got some back up for my own ideas as well.

As a pair for the negotiation I had lovely Vanesa (with one s :)) Vanesa was very convincing and easy to approach as a negotiator. She didn't use any aggressive methods to get her opinions through which made the negotiation very pleasant. Even though we had very different views of the situation we managed to listen and understand each other. I am also rather happy about my own performance in the negotiation. I had good arguments for all my requests and I was able to present them in a convincing matter. I also used my problem solving skills to come up with solution that would please us both. What I could have done better is that maybe I was a bit too kind and I could have demanded more in some cases. However, we both made some sacrifices and the deal we came up with was a compromise for both parties so I did not give in too easily. All in all I had fun negotiating with Vanesa and I think this exercise really boosted my confidence. Next time I will be again slightly more talented.

Looking forward to the next negotiation which will be held via Skype. That sounds super exciting!

  1. it was such a pleasure for me too (in fact, i had written something similar in my post haha).
SURE YOU DID PRETTY WELL!! I didnt´write it in additional comments, but now I have realised that the tone of your voice helped me to be more relax, I think that maybe if you were asking for more i could have thought that you only wanted to take advantage...but I dont know what would have happened in many different scenarios...im really curious...but we will never know....

  2. Hey,
I also agree that sharing ideas at the beginning was very helpful. I bet the Skype negotiation will be a lot more challenging!!
