Let's not talk
Our third weekly meeting was about non-verbal communication. It has been said that non-verbal communication addresses approximately 65% of our communication (Mooreland 2015). That means that the words we speak are only part of the message we are sending to the other party. Facial expressions, tone of voice, movements, appearance, eye contact, gestures and postures are examples of non-verbal communication.
Non-verbal communication is something that is happening all the time everywhere. Even when we are not planning on starting a conversation we are communicating non-verbally. That is why it is essential that we learn to acknowledge what messages we are sending. Through a clever use of non-verbal communication the message we are trying to say out loud can be reinforced for example by facial expressions.
I have a feeling that I am usually very conscious about my appearance and body movements while communicating. Sometimes I find it even disturbing because it is hard for me to concentrate on what the other person is saying or what I should be saying if I am thinking too much about how to pose or move my hands. I should learn to find the balance between non-verbal and verbal communication in order to bring out the best in me.
In the lecture we got to experience the power of non-verbal communication through a few short games. In my opinion those really cheered up the atmosphere and showed us that even a more complex messages can be understood without words or common language.
Next week we are facing our first assessed negotiation. I am at the same time looking forward to it and feeling nervous about it. It is good though that we were given enough time to prepare for it. I am hoping that I am able to use some non-verbal tactics in our negotiation and I also try my best to read the other person's non-verbal messages. But let's not forget the actual words :)
This comic shows why some are better in non-verbal communication than others:

I have the same thing with being overly conscious about my appearance, hands etc. while communicating. Strangely enough it's almost always only in the beginning when meeting someone. After some time I just completely forget about my non-verbals and just focus fully on the conversation.
