Kick-off

This blog is dedicated to the discussion and reflection of the course International Negotiations. I was rather excited when I first found out that this course was about to be held this fall. I have, for some time actually, wanted to participate in a course where I am able to boost my oral skills in English and gain communication skills that could be useful in my future career. As it turned out in the first lecture this course is all about those things.

The first lecture was mostly about introducing the course itself and its content. However, we also had time to these two short get-acquinted games. Even though these kind of exercises first sound a bit silly I think they are important in order to get familiar with the new faces. It makes it so much easier to work together during the course when we know each other well and for little shy people like myself it is easier to open up and share ideas when I know the people I am talking to.

In the first lecture we talked about what does a negotiation mean and what makes a good negotiator. My owns strengths as a negotiator are my ability to bring out my point of view in a  convincing way and to come along well with different kind of people. I usually am a bit reluctant in giving up on my opinions. That is not necessarily a good thing in all negotiations. A good negotiator is good at listening and understanding the other parties and their goals. Compromising and finding a solution that pleases all parties is also an essential part of a good negotiation. Listening is something I could work on more and hopefully I get a chance in this course.

All in all, I am looking forward to the next lectures and what they have to offer. I am expecting some good conversations and I am especially interested in learning from our exchange students. I think it is a wonderful thing that our group is so diverse and we really should take advantage of it.

This is my plan for our next negotiation:

Until next time,

Sanni
